THE OWNERS of a whiskey firm which is distilled right in the heart of Limerick are in great spirits after winning five awards.

Thomond Gate Limerick whiskey has struck gold at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition awards which were held in the British capital city, London.

Five of its whiskeys were submitted to a panel of experts for blind tasting and assessment.

And all of these medalled: one whiskey secured gold, two won silver, and two got bronze.

Founded in 2019 by Ballyclough man Nicholas Ryan, Thomond Gate Limerick Whiskey’s goal is to restore Limerick's place in the world of the spirit and offer premium, handcrafted whiskey that showcases its rich heritage.

The last time whiskey was distilled here prior to 2019 was a century before, in Brown’s Quay, Thomondgate.

Competition judges in London gave a gold medal to Thomond Gate Whiskey’s Miguel Hogan Ruby Port Cask single malt whiskey.

Its Galloping Hogan cognac cask finish single malt won a silver, as did its John Wolfe Ambrose Irish single malt whiskey.,

Bronze medals went to its ‘Hlymrekr’ Danish rye finish single pot still, and its Patrick Sarsfield Château Kirwan Cask single pot.

Mr Ryan said staff are “thrilled” to win gold in what he felt was a competitive field.

“It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, and it's an honour to be recognized as a leading independent brand in the industry. This win not only speaks to the quality of our whiskey, but it also highlights the growing success of independent producers in the Republic of Ireland,” he said.

Mr Ryan also revealed that Thomond Gate Whiskey is to be sold across a number of outlets on the west coast of the United States of America.
