TWO promising Limerick swimmers impressed when among a 47-strong team who represented Ireland at a big international meet in Portugal.

Siblings Denis and Lucy O'Brien, aged 17, and 15 respectively both representing Swim Ireland's Junior National Pathway squad at the 2025 Lisbon International Meet this month.

Both Denis and Lucy won their first individual international medal at the prestigious event. Denis finished second in the 800m freestyle with a time of 8:28.07, as well as recording three top 10 finishes in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle. 

Lucy came third in the women's 50m butterfly claiming her first international medal. She also had three top 8 finishes in the 400IM, 200IM and the 100 butterfly.

Denis O'Brien is a Leaving Cert student in Mungret Community College. He trains 22 hours a week with the National Centre,  Limerick in UL. He previously represented Ireland in the European Youth Olympics in 2023 and the European Junior open water.
In 2024, the talented teenager represented Ireland in the European Junior Swimming Championships and on the European Junior Open Water 7.5km. Denis is currently the 10km open water champion. Denis' goal this year is to qualify for the European Junior swim team.
 
Lucy O'Brien is a Transition Year student in Mungret Community College. She trains 20 hours a week in the National Center Limerick in UL. Lucy is the current Irish Junior record holder of the 50m fly short course and holds numerous Munster records.
Lucy's target is to make the European Junior swim team.

Denis and Lucy are currently seeking further sponsorship to support Denis and Lucy in their target to represent Ireland at the Olympics in Los Angeles 2028.
