MUNSTER Rugby head coach Graham Rowntree has said that a "change to their kicking game" was the crucial element in getting the victory over Bulls in the sides first game of two down in South Africa.
The province came away with an incredible 27-22 victory over the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld setting them up nicely for this weekends challenge against the Emirate Lions in Johannesburg at 4pm Irish time.
Speaking at the Munster Rugby press conference this week Rowntree went on to say: "We had a solid plan in place and changed out kicking game strategy, one we have been using for the best part of two years, to nullify their threats and keep them down their end of the field to stop the counter running against us.
"We didn't make a big deal of the altitude, lads just got on with it and we had a strong bench. I am really proud of how they performed when they came on. In terms of this weekend we have to be good at nearly the exact same things again. You have to match a big set piece and deny them access at the breakdown. Lions are known for poaching the ball and we have to protect it because these teams can burn you quickly."
The Munster team have become well known with travelling to South Africa and coming away with incredible victories, much like last season in URC, and Graham and his coaching staff know the importance of taking those memories of last year and helping with these two games.
"It's special being down here and it is a perfect time for the group to connect with each other again. We have fond memories of the place and the last time we were here we won a final so we are enjoying our time here as a group."
Munster's game against the Emirate Lions will be shown live on TG4 this Saturday from 3:30pm.
