GARRYOWEN FC will look to win the Munster Senior Challenge Cup for the first time since 2018 when facing great rivals Cork Constitution in this season's final at Thomond Park on St Patrick's Day.
All-Ireland League Division 1B side Garryowen will be hoping to claim their trophy for the 40th time in their prestigious history. Their last victory came in 2018 as they ended Cork Constitution’s dominance over the competition, overcoming UL Bohemian in the final.
Garryowen return to the final after last making an appearance in 2022 where they lost narrowly to Young Munster while Cork Constitution are in their first Munster Senior Challenge Cup final since 2019 where they beat Young Munster 24-17 in Thomond Park.
Whichever of the two clubs who will win Sunday’s Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Challenge Cup clash at Thomond Park Stadium, in doing so, they will be ending the recent dominance of Young Munster who claimed a hat-trick of titles.
This season saw a new format implemented with a round-robin pool stage taking place in August and September with the four pool winners advancing to the semi-finals.
Although Garryowen lost to Young Munster, they topped their pool thanks to bonus-point wins over Cashel and UCC. This led to a semi-final meeting with Bruff with the Light Blues beating their County Limerick opposition 39-10.
Cork Constitution meanwhile secured three bonus-point wins over Highfield, Nenagh Ormond and Shannon before beating Old Crescent 48-10 in the semi-final.
In their last outing in Division 1B of the energia All-Ireland League, promotion play-off chasing Garryowen dropped to fourth-placed in the table after succumbing 10-21 to Old Wesley at Energia Park earlier this month.
Garryowen raced into an early 10-0 lead against their hosts Old Wesley at Energia Park. However, Old Wesley rallied strongly before half time with 21 unanswered points, including three tries to lead by 11 points at half-time. Next up for Garryowen in the AIL is a crucial home date with Queens at Dooradoyle on March 23.
The Light Blues’ Munster Senior Cup final opponents Cork Con sit in second spot in Division 1A of the AIL.
