Three UL players in Irish Colleges and Universities squad for friendly fixture

Three UL players, Leon Daly (Pike Rovers) and Matt Jones (Treaty United) and Kildare native Tom Kelly are named in the Irish Colleges and Universities squad for a friendly fixture in Dublin

FRESH from their run to the Collingwood Cup Final last week, three University of Limerick players have been called up to the Irish Colleges and Universities squad.

Tom Kelly, Leon Daly (Pike Rovers) and Matt Jones (Treaty United) will feature in a friendly today, Wednesday, February 25, against the Irish Defence Forces at Crumlin United's grounds in Dublin.

Kildare native Kelly captained the UL side from the heart of defence during their cup run, while Jones showcased his League of Ireland pedigree with a series of composed displays in midfield.

Since arriving at UL, mercurial winger Daly has attracted attention across the junior ranks, lining out for Aisling Annacotty before making the switch to Pike Rovers.

For fourth-year students Kelly and Daly, the call-up represents a fitting way to bring the curtain down on their intervarsity careers, while it serves as a glowing endorsement of the quality first-year Jones already possesses.

Current UL squad member Joey Rushe (Aisling Annacotty) also received a call-up in November, featuring against the Defence Forces.

This selection marks the largest UL representation in an Irish Colleges & Universities squad in over a decade, when four players were chosen for the World University Games in 2015.
