MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP:

Aisling Annacotty 3 Fairview Rgs 2

AISLING Annacotty produced a stunning comeback to topple Premier League leaders Fairview Rgs in the Munster Junior Cup at Annacotty on Saturday evening.

Few would have given the home side any chance as they slinked off the field at half time two goals behind. However, a superb second half display saw Aisling reach the open stages of the competition.

The game was rather slow to get going but the visitors broke the deadlock midway through the half when Oleg Vysochan was upended in the area and Shane Duggan tucked away the spot kick.

Fairview doubled their advantage on the hour mark. Darragh Rainsford delivered a superb pass across goal allowing Vysochan to arrive at the back post to fire home.

Fairview were well ion control as the half wore on but a Joel Coustrain effort that rattled the crossbar gave an indication of what was to come.

Aisling pulled one back on the hour mark. Jack Aherne showed great determination when he picked up a loose pass in midfield. He traded passes with Joel Coustrain and played an inviting ball across goal where Jamie Halpin was on hand to fire in from close range.

Aisling kept pressing and got their reward eight minutes from time when Coustrain played a free kick into the area and Raid Mouras rose unmarked to head in from six yards to huge celebrations.

Things got even better for the home side three minutes later when Adam Foley played a sweet through ball for Halpin to get in behind the ‘View defence and fire past McCarthy to seal the win.

It will be a bitterly disappointing result for the Blues. They had the game well in control but lost their way once they conceded.

Emotions will be slightly different out in Annacotty. The management will be delighted with the fight they showed to snatch victory from what looked a certain defeat.

Pike Rovers 2 Ballynanty Rovers 2 (Pike won 4-3 on pens aet)

PIKE Rovers and Ballynanty Rvs needed spot kicks to separate the sides in Crossagalla on Sunday and it was last season’s runners-up Pike Rvs who emerged victorious after an exciting tussle.

Like Fairview on the previous night, Pike let slip a two-goal lead when AJ Moloneyt’s striker forced the game to extra time. Neither of two tired sides looked like breaking the deadlock in extra time so we headed to penalties.

Pike had a perfect start to proceedings, and took the lead after three minutes. Leon Daly’s inswinging corner kick was headed goalward by Adam Lipper. Tommy Holland parried the effort but Ruari Morgan pounced on the rebound to score.

The Hoops doubled their lead after 15 minutes. Leon Daly’s low shot struck the upright and the rebound fell into the path of Dylan Murphy who tucked away the rebound from an acute angle.

Their two-goal advantage seemed to lower the Pike vigilance and Balla took advantage three minutes later. Kevin Laffan started the move when his through ball found Vinny Ryan who rounded the keeper but saw his goal bound shot cleared by Jack Croke. Laffan finished off from close range after Kane Connolly’s shot had come back off the upright.

Pike looked like they had the job done but in injury time James Fitzgerald played a ball across goal. Jack O’Callaghan’s shot was blocked but AJ Moloney followed up to fire low into the corner.

Extra time saw Pike stalwart Gary Neville hobble out of the action to be replaced by youngster Shane Paerse and it was the keeper who stole the headlines saving twice in the penalty shoot-out to ensure Pike’s passage top the next stage.

Once Ousman Darboe broke the deadlock on four minutes the goals continued to flow.
