Limerick will be looking to make it three wins from three when they travel to Portlaoise to face Westmeath in round three of their Tailteann Cup campaign.

Jimmy Lee's side have enjoyed a successful campaign to this point with two wins from their opening two games. The Shannonsiders' followed up an opening round win over London in Newcastle West with an impressive victory over Antrim in Corrigan Park last week, a performance which Lee labelled the most satisfying of his two-year tenure.

However, Limerick are sure to face their sternest test to date when they meet Westmeath this weekend at O'Moore Park. The 2022 Tailteann Cup winners have also won their opening two games, easily dispatching of both London and Antrim.

It will be a winner-take-all for top spot of group three but Limerick will have their work cut for them as they face one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Top spot would ensure Limerick a home quarter-final berth . A defeat or draw (due to Westmeath's vastly superior points difference) would see the Treaty County faced with a preliminary quarter-final.

Manager Jimmy Lee is aware of the threat that the Midlanders' will pose but says that it should not stop his side from looking to take the two points that would see them top group three.

“It's great that we're guaranteed a preliminary quarter-final but there's nothing to stop us going after Westmeath,” he said.

We have a lot of work to do as they are a serious outfit but we're going up to Portlaoise facing them on level terms and it's about how we face that,” he added.

The Newcastle West club man says that last year's league encounter gives his side hope heading into this year's Tailteann Cup encounter.

“Last year we performed well up in Mullingar and that was a turning point for us last year. This time around it's an opportunity for us to win the group which would give us a bit of breathing space and that's what we're going after,” he said.

Limerick will need big performances from key players like Iain Corbett and James Naughton if they are to get the better of Westmeath but Lee is hopeful that it will be the collective effort that sees his side over the line.

“We just want to see a continuation of what we've seen so far with a bit of an extra improvement,” he said.

We've built a very strong resilience, we just need a ruthlessness when we do get in front and a bit more game management but we're happy enough overall, I'm really happy with the boys and their attitude,” he concluded.

Limerick will be hoping to go one better than they last year where they were comprehensively beaten by Tony McEntee's Sligo in Markievicz Park on a scoreline of 2-20 to 0-9.

Limerick have never advanced past the quarter-finals stage of the Tailteann Cup, something they will be looking to change this year. Throw in is at 2pm.
