LIMERICK'S main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street, has received its third boost in as many weeks with the local authority confirming it is planning to build new apartments at its former library building.
Under plans due to be presented to councillors in the New Year, 58 O’Connell Street is set to be converted into five new apartments, and a rooftop extension.
Narrative 4 which is based on the ground floor of the O'Connell St complex will remain in situ, with the new living spaces in the basement, first, second and third floor levels, and on the rooftop.
A council spokesperson said if the redevelopment is approved, a 15-month construction period is envisioned.
"The redevelopment of 58 O’Connell Street will complement the rejuvenation work on O’Connell Street and the focus on creating a more liveable city. The apartment units will cater for modern living needs with a focus on sustainability. These scheme also provides for a continuous pedestrian connection along the laneway from Glenworth Street to Mallow Street. These sections of laneway are currently unconnected dead end spaces. Providing greater permeability is important to fully activate spaces of this nature," they added.
Metropolitan district leader, Cllr Olivia O'Sullivan said: "Any new accommodation planned for the city is welcome given the current level of demand - it is particularly welcome to see the Council take on this work in a protected building on our main street. These five new apartments in the former library building will mean more people living in our city centre which is what Limerick needs."
The application will be decided by metropolitan district councillors, as they are public projects, and will come before them for decision in the New Year.
