THE EMERGENCY services have been called to what appears to be a huge fire in a commercial building in Limerick.

Nine units from Limerick Fire and Rescue crews are tackling the huge inferno.

Smoke has been seen billowing in skies over the city, with flames seen across the southside.

Limerick Live understands that the fire is located in a commercial premises in the Raheen area.

One witness described "huge clouds of smoke, sirens and quite a few loud bangs" over the last half an hour.

Four units of the Limerick Fire and Rescue Service have been dispatched from the city, three from Rathkeale, and one from Foynes.

Local councillor Daniel Butler advised people to avoid the area and all residents living in close proximity to keep their windows closed.

"Very large smoke plumes overhead," he stated in a Tweet.

Matt Hayes tweeted: "Quite a big fire out past Raheen in Limerick. Unsure if it's at the back of The Grange housing estate. Some loud bangs in the last few minutes and sparks flying into the night sky. Hope nobody is hurt."

There are no reports of any injuries arising from the fire and the cause of the blaze is not yet know.

It's expected that technical examinations will be carried out once it is safe to do so.
