Popular post office set to re-open in Limerick village

Shanagolden Post Office shut its doors in September, 2022

MEMBERS of a Limerick village are ‘ecstatic’ as a previously closed post office is set to re-open.

The post office which closed in Shanagolden a number of weeks ago caused controversy when it shut its doors.

Protesters took to the streets outside the post office building in the heart of Shanagolden village when the closure was announced but had no immediate success.

At the time of the initial closure, a spokesperson for An Post said: "Our postmaster in Shanagolden wishes to exit the business and plans to close the office... Customers will be transferred, in the first instance, to Foynes post office which is just over 5km away."

The lack of a post office in Shanagolden meant those receiving their pension or social welfare payments had to travel to Foynes to utilise An Post's services.

This was particularly difficult for those who had no access to transport to Foynes.

It was announced earlier that a new postmaster had agreed to take over in Shanagolden Post Office and it is set to re-open this Friday.

Limerick TD and Minister Patrick O’Donovan has said that the reopening of the Shanagolden Post Office will be a fantastic day for the entire community.

“I was thrilled for the community and the soon-to-be new postmaster. I know Friday will be a really proud day for the entire parish," Minister O'Donovan said.
