KILTEELY-Dromkeen playground committee hope to hit the jackpot on Saturday night.
They are hosting a fundraiser in Limerick Greyhound Stadium this Saturday, March 23 from 6.30pm. It is the opening night of the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial Stakes.
After months of talking about a much-needed playground in the parish, a working committee was formed to make it a reality.
One of the committee, Tracey McCarthy said the playground will cost an estimated €100,000. The nearest ones are Pallasgreen or Hospital.
“We have identified a small patch of land beside the parochial house that would suit the needs of this project. The positives are that there’s a pedestrian crossing, along with ample parking already in place. There is suitable lighting thus reducing the cost of the playground and allowing us greater scope to plan for the equipment that can be purchased.
“Our plan is also to promote inclusion for all young people with specialised equipment to allow children with disabilities to partake and engage in this project,” said Ms McCarthy.
The committee comes under Kilteely Dromkeen Cloverfield Community Council.
“We are a highly motivated rural community who actively engage in worthwhile projects that include an annual festival, Tidy Towns, drama group, GAA projects and much more. As a community, we came together in October 2018 when around 30 joined together to discuss the concept of a community playground, knowing the benefits that this would bring young people in our parish, along with surrounding areas.
“We believe that having amenities like a community playground and other worthwhile projects within our catchment area will have a positive effect to encourage young families to come, live and be involved in our community,” said Tracey.
They are currently in the process of fundraising and have been inundated with offers of assistance, support and guidance to get this project over the line.
“Our bake sale at Christmas raised over €5,000. This is the type of community spirit that we have in the parish of Kilteely-Dromkeen,” said Tracey.
Tickets for Saturday night in Limerick Greyhound Stadium are €10. This includes admission, race programme and entry into the Buster draw. Accompanied children go free. Tickets available from any committee member or 086 8423172.
