Race director issues apology after incident which saw race finishes not get medal

ORGANISERS of a fun run in Limerick have promised children who did not receive finishers medals - they will receive them in the post within a fortnight.

A curtain-raiser to Sunday's Regeneron Great Limerick Run, the race day for younger children attracted more than 3,000 from the city, county and further afield at University of Limerick (UL) on Saturday.

Runs ranged from between 1km to 2km in length, with separate starts for wheelchair users, junior and senior infants, first to third class children, and fourth to sixth class children.

But there was disappointment after it emerged around 100 children who finished the final run for fourth, fifth and sixth class were not able to collect their medals.

It's despite the organisers saying a finishers medal will be given to every child which crosses the finish line.

Race director Sliabh Wells told Limerick Live: "We are hugely disappointed this happened. We'll be looking to rectify it immediately. We have taken some parents details, but we would encourage everyone affected to contact us at [email protected]."

He said medals will be posted out to every child who did not get a medal, and the hope is it will all be sorted in the next fortnight.

"We are sorry and disappointed it happened. We understand people's frustrations and are keen to resolve it," Mr Wells added.

Limerick Live understands the shortage of medals was caused by some runners - and indeed adults - either taking away multiple medals, or ones they were not entitled to.

Medals were reserved for children who formally entered this year's Fun Runs at UL online, as opposed to just turning up on the day.

The Regeneron Great Limerick Run, which took place on Sunday, saw participation numbers break through the 20,000 mark for the first time.

Around 55,000 people lined the race route to cheer on the runners.
