Giving blood in Limerick could save lives this Christmas

Across the country, 3,000 blood donations are needed every week

Blood donor clinics will be held in Limerick in December and January

People can donate blood in Castletroy and Caherdavin around the Christmas period

THE IRISH Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has warned that hospitals will need a steady and reliable flow of blood every day over the Christmas holidays.

Every donation is crucial, according to the IBTS.

More than 67% of donated blood supports cancer patients, 27% is used in surgery and emergency care and 6% helps mothers experiencing complications after childbirth and premature babies.

“It is essential to build up our stock of all blood types to ensure continuity of supply to Irish hospitals,” said Alex O’Connor, IBTS Recruitment Executive.

He added: “Demand from Irish hospitals has not slowed down. Your donation can help ensure patients continue to get the blood they urgently need. Giving blood takes less than an hour and could mean the world to someone in need.”

Across Ireland, 3,000 blood donations are needed every week to meet hospital requirements.

There are blood donation clinics in Castletroy Park Hotel on Sunday, December 21 between 11.50am and 3.10pm, on Monday, December 22 between 4.20pm and 7.40pm and on Wednesday, December 23 between 3.20pm and 6.40pm. There will also be a clinic in the Greenhills Hotel, Caherdavin on Friday, January 2 between 1.50pm and 5.10pm.

Call 1800 222 111 to donate, new and old donors are welcome and those who used to live in the UK are also welcome to donate.
