THE director of a development firm planning a series of apartments has confirmed that, if approved, they will not be used for emergency accommodation.

Indus Ventures is expected in the next fortnight to find out whether it has permission to construct a new apartment complex at Mount St Alphonsus Street in the city.

The firm is planning to demolish an existing warehouse building and construct the block which will tower up between five and six storeys.

Twenty-five one-bedroom apartments and 23 two-bedroom apartments are planned. But given its neighbouring proximity to the McGarry House homeless shelter run by Novas, fears were raised from locals that it could be used as overspill accommodation.

Novas communications boss Dr Una Burns previously confirmed that the charity has no connection with the development.

Now, Adam Kearney, a director with Indus Ventures, has added: “I want to clarify on foot of some recent reporting, that the applicant company have no affiliations or connections with any Approved Housing Body either adjacent to the site or elsewhere and can confirm that the scheme will not be used for the purposes of emergency accommodation.”

Mr Kearney, an architect by profession, is also the agent on the development.

“The intention is to develop this property for market sale or rental or as a ‘cost rental’ scheme to accommodate those who wish to work and live in Limerick city centre. As a company that is invested in the urban renewal of the city, we are keenly aware that an over concentration of any specific tenure type can militate against the creation of sustainable and vibrant urban communities,” he added.

A decision is scheduled to be made by council by October 12.
