For decades, the Limerick footballers have lived in the shadow of their hurling counterparts - always there, always battling, but rarely in the spotlight.

That all changes this Saturday when Jimmy Lee’s men take to the hallowed turf of Croke Park for the Tailteann Cup final against Kildare.

Three weeks ago, while the county was still reeling from a shock hurling exit to 14-man Dublin on the longest day of the year, it was the footballers who stepped up and lifted spirits.

Their win over Wicklow the following day wasn’t just a result - it was a statement. Limerick played with pace, hunger, and heart. They weren’t just brave; they were brilliant.

This campaign has been nothing short of special.

Jimmy Lee, a humble figure from Newcastle West, has followed in the footsteps of his brother Billy and built a squad from scraps - inheriting a team gutted by retirements, injuries, emigration and other commitments.

Nineteen players gone in one swoop. Most would have folded. Limerick football didn’t. The resilience of this group has struck a chord with fans. In a county where football plays second fiddle to hurling, the wider public is now taking notice.

There’s something undeniably romantic about their rise - it’s the underdog tale we all love.

And no doubt, the late Mary Lee - Jimmy and Billy's dear mother - who followed Limerick football through thick and thin, is watching with pride from above, ready to make her own bit of noise come throw-in at 2.30pm on Saturday.

So, let’s all take a leaf from Mary’s book. Let’s dig out the green flags. Let’s show this team - these warriors who refused to give up - that Limerick is behind them.

A win on Saturday means a place in the 2026 Sam Maguire, yes. But more than that, it means recognition.

It means pride.

Come on Limerick.

Let’s do this!
