A CALL HAS been made to rename a busy city roundabout in honour of one of Limerick's star hurlers.

Metropolitan district leader Cllr Kieran O'Hanlon believes the Parkway Roundabout should be named after All-Star Limerick wing-forward Gearóid Hegarty.

The roundabout is located more or less on the doorstep of where the 30-year-old plays his club hurling, at St Patrick's GAA.

Addressing this month's metropolitan district meeting, Cllr O'Hanlon took inspiration from the US president Donald Trump.

Following a discussion over traffic chaos at the Parkway Roundabout, the Fianna Fail member - who represents the area on council - came up with the novel idea.

He said: "By the way, the name the Parkway Roundabout: I feel like Donald Trump. He changed the Gulf of Mexico. I think we should consider it be called the Gearóid Hegarty roundabout. We have the Mackey Roundabout outside there."

Secondary school teacher Gearóid, a five-time All-Ireland winner with Limerick, made his long-awaited return to play last weekend after a hand injury sustained earlier this year.

Former mayor Cllr O'Hanlon believes the St Patrick's clubman fully deserves the accolade of having a roundabout in the city named after him.

As he mentioned, the Mackey Roundabout, off the M7 was named after Mick Mackey, and is located near to his home club of Ahane.

The iconic Castleconnell man won three All-Ireland senior hurling titles in 1934, 1936, and 1940.

Alongside this, he won five Munster titles, five National League titles and eight Railway Cups in his 42 appearances for the senior panel.

Gearóid, by comparison, has lined out for Limerick's senior hurlers 46 times from 2016 to now.

As well as the five senior All-Ireland medals he has in his possession, he has also collected six Munster titles and three National League crowns.

He has been named on the All-Star team on four occasions.
