THE next generation of healthcare professionals in Limerick are set to be inspired once again by an annual online event.

Secondary school students interested in a future career in healthcare will be able to log on to the Junior Health Sciences Academy Early Careers Event this October.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan TD, visited Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh to launch the next Early Careers Event, which will be hosted online on October 8 and October 10.

The online Zoom meetings will benefit Transition Year (TY), 5th and 6th year students in Limerick and across the Mid-West region and for the first time, students from the Technological University of the Shannon will provide insights into the health programmes on offer at TUS.

Donncha Ó Treasaigh, acting chief executive at the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (ETB) said: “This innovative platform will play a key role in attracting and nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals across Limerick.

“With our region's growing healthcare sector, it's crucial that we inspire the next generation to consider the vast array of rewarding careers available.

“This website provides a one-stop shop for them to explore different specialities, training pathways, and the incredible impact they can make on people's lives.”

Clinical staff representing more than 20 healthcare professions will participate, as well as academic staff and students from health programmes at University of Limerick (UL).

Also lined up are short video tours of clinical departments, including radiology and laboratory, a ‘Business in Health’ segment, a Q&A session and patient perspectives, the latter including an interactive video tracking the experience of a ‘patient’ having a heart attack.

The annual online event is organised by the Health Sciences Academy based at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), along with Limerick and Clare ETB and Limerick Education Support Centre.

The Zoom meetings will take place over two mornings: 9am to 11.30am on Tuesday, October 8 and the same time on Thursday, October 10.
