No timeline in place for new library in Limerick suburb

Council has identified land near Castletroy Town Centre

COUNCIL says it cannot provide a timeline in relation to a new library in the Castletroy area.

At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, Cllr Joe Pond, Fianna Fail, sought an update on the proposal, which is identified in the local authority’s library development plan.

Council librarian Damien Brady confirmed again that while two potential sites have been identified - one near Castletroy Town Centre - due to the significant planning needs around it, “we are not in a position at this stage to have a definite timeline for delivery.”

“A facility of this size and range requires significant planning and resources, both capital and revenue and progress must be set in the context of other local authority demands,” the librarian stated in a written answer to Cllr Pond.

The councillor was disappointed with the answer.

“I thought it would be further progressed by now. This is going on the last number of years. These sites have been identified for a while, but there has been no progress,” said Cllr Pond.

He said with Castletroy being the fastest-growing suburb in Limerick, the need for a library, which could also serve as a community centre is paramount.

“Make it a building all the community could use. If you’re looking at the library, you’re looking at schools, looking at everything around here,” he added.
