A POPULAR northside scout group is celebrating a half-century in the community.

Caherdavin Scouts marked its 50th anniversary at its hall in Blackthorn Drive with a special ceremony to mark the investiture of 33 new youngsters to the scouting movement.

There were reasons for the group to celebrate on the double.

That’s because the group has been awarded €3,000 in a local enhancement grant from government.

Bob Halvey, group leader, says this will allow the buying of more equipment.

Philip Kelly, the Limerick Scout County commisssioner was on hand to join in the celebrations on the northside.

Bob said it is some achievement for a scout group to be in business for more than 50 years.

He paid tribute to the volunteers who keep the show on the road.

“This is a testament to all of our volunteers.”

He said there is always a need for more volunteers.

“At the moment, it's always resting with the same few people to get things done week in, week out,” he explained.

Caherdavin Scouts has 50 youth members and 18 scout leaders.

They meet in the scout hall each Thursday at 7.30pm.
