Join in Limerick’s celebration of National Biodiversity Week

LIMERICK City and County Council has announced a "vibrant celebration" of National Biodiversity Week from May 17 - 26 .

This year’s theme, Embrace Nature’s Symphony, invites the community to connect with nature through a series of engaging and educational activities designed to highlight the importance of biodiversity and inspire collective action towards its conservation.

Event Highlights

Bats & Moths: Creatures of the Night – Discover the nocturnal wonders of the Baggot Estate with wildlife expert Albert Nolan. Wednesday, 15 May. (Evening event. Limited spaces available, booking via Eventbrite required.)

Castletroy Greenway Dawn Chorus – Experience the early morning melodies of our feathered friends with The Go Green Routes Project. Saturday, 18 May, 5am – 7am. (Prior booking essential on Limerick.ie.)

Gardening and Wildlife Workshops – Join Eanna Ní Lamhna, Carl Wright, and local experts in Broadford for a day of learning and fun. Saturday, 18 May, 10am – 4:30pm. (Entry fee €10.00. This event is in collaboration with Broadford Community Development.)

Family Guided Walk for Biodiversity – Explore the natural beauty of Newcastle West Demense with Geoff Hunt. Sunday, 19 May, 2:30pm -3:30pm. (Meeting Point: Car Park near the playground.)

Griston Bog Discovery – Learn about this unique ecosystem in collaboration with Ballyhoura and the Irish Peatland Conservation Council. Thursday, 23 May, 7pm – 8:30pm.

Pollinator ID Hunt in Curraghchase – Embark on an adventure with pollinator expert Áine Ni Flahatharta. Saturday, 25 May, 11am -1pm.

These events are facilitated by Limerick City and County Council in collaboration with The Heritage Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Submissions are also invited on the discussion paper to begin the process of drafting the Limerick City and County Council Biodiversity Action Plan 2024/5-2030. Submissions, observations and views are welcome to the Draft Discussion Paper through Mypoint, you can email biodiversityactionplan@ limerick.ie or send a written submission to:

Biodiversity Officer, Environment & Climate Action Team, Limerick City & County Council, Dooradoyle, Limerick.

The closing date for receipt of observations and submissions is close of business on Monday, May 27, 2024

Participants are advised to wear sensible footwear and clothing to all events. Children must be supervised by a carer, guardian or parent at all times.
