THE CITY is plagued with drug addiction, said a district court judge who is based in Limerick day in and day out.

Judge Patricia Harney was speaking prior to sentencing a young man who had pleaded guilty to possession of drugs and having cocaine for sale or supply.

Judge Harney said on a previous court date she had told him she would not send him to jail if he got a job.

“You’re sitting at home with mammy at 24-years-of-age and peddling drugs,” said Judge Harney.

The judge said the accused has no history of employment and doesn’t give the impression he is “trying too hard” to find work.

Judge Harney said she told him in 2022 that if he got employment or was taking the appropriate steps regarding courses she would not imprison him.

“His only career in life seems to be sitting on his rear end with mammy which he has been doing since his Junior Cert. He has done absolutely nothing. He doesn’t cover himself in glory in the Probation Service reports. He is wasting everybody’s time,” said Judge Harney.

Ian McNamara, solicitor for the defendant, said his client is open to programmes and has no previous convictions.

Judge Harney asked “What does he think is going to happen - his fairy godmother is going to say come fly to work with me.”

The judge imposed a four-week prison sentence for the sale and supply of cocaine. The possession charge was taken into consideration.

Recognisance was fixed in the event of an appeal.
