SINN Féin TD for Limerick City, Maurice Quinlivan, has been formally selected by the party to contest the Limerick mayoral election.

Speaking following a meeting of the party’s Ard Chomhairle this weekend, Deputy Quinlivan said he was honoured to have been selected by the party to be Sinn Féin’s candidate for the Limerick Mayoral election.

“I want to be mayor of Limerick to serve as a mayor for all the people of Limerick. The people of Limerick need a mayor who will stand up for Limerick, who will work hard to ensure that we get a fair deal from the Government and that our city and county work better for its people. That is what I am committed to delivering.

“The people of Limerick need change. They need change to end the crisis at University Hospital Limerick, tackle the housing crisis and deliver much-needed investment and regeneration across our city and county. As a mayor for all the people of Limerick, I would deliver this change. Limerick has so much potential, but this potential must be unlocked," said Mr Quinlivan.

Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald, who was in Limerick on Wednesday, said she was delighted that Mr Quinlivan has been confirmed as Sinn Féin’s candidate to be mayor of Limerick.

"Maurice will be a Mayor for all the people of Limerick. I am proud to have known Maurice for many years. His record as an activist and as a public representative is second to none. He is deeply rooted in his community and is a hard worker who will be a strong voice for the people of Limerick as mayor.

“His track record in Limerick includes managing a business, serving as a councillor, a TD and party spokesperson, from enterprise to workers’ rights, trade and employment. He also serves as an effective chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

"He has been a formidable voice for Limerick in the Dáil and would stand up for the city and county as mayor to deliver the change that the people of Limerick need," said Deputy McDonald.

“Maurice’s proven ability to achieve consensus as an Oireachtas Committee chair would make him an ideal person to serve as Mayor of Limerick. By voting for Maurice Quinlivan for mayor of Limerick, you are voting for a mayor for the people," she concluded.
