WORKS ON reuniting up to 80 metres of Limerick’s ancient city walls will soon start, as Limerick City and County Council announce the closure of a section of a city road.

St Anne’s Court, from its junction with Bishop Street to its junction with Island Road, will be closed from 9am Monday, April 8 to 6pm on April 26.

The closure will facilitate site investigation works and an archaeological study of St Anne’s Court and its nearby areas.

Previously, in 2021, director of service Caroline Curley revealed works on a site at St Anne’s Court on the junction of the Island Road and Athlunkard Street “has the potential to re-unite over 80m of the early 13th century defences.”

“The assessment recommended advance archaeological test trenching and a final design that would bring the line of the wall back into the public realm with the layout reflecting its location,” she wrote in answer to former Sinn Fein councillor, John Costelloe, who, at the time, had sought assurances that the discovery will be protected as the land is developed for housing.

Local diversions will operate at the time of the works, however, pedestrian access to footpaths will be maintained at all times and emergency service vehicle access will be available at all times.

According to a spokesperson from Limerick City and County Council, on-street parking may be suspended on the left-hand side for the duration of the site investigation and archaeological works.
