THE MOST expensive events to police locally since 2022 were The Great Limerick Run, a Munster championship game at TUS Gaelic Grounds and a big screen showing of the All-Ireland hurling final.
Information provided by An Garda Siochana to the Limerick Leader reveal the three events cost a total of €45,263 to police.
Under section 30 of the An Garda Siochana Act 2005, the force is entitled to charge for police services at events on private property or in areas open to the public if it's in the public interest and consistent with the functions of the agency.
The information revealed the most costly event to police in Limerick during 2022 took place on Sunday, May 1, in the shape of the Regeneron Great Limerick Run.
The company behind the event - which drew 14,000 runners - were charged €12,373 by Limerick gardaí to police the event.
The following weekend, on Sunday, May 8, a Munster Championship hurling match between Limerick and Tipperary saw €12,373 paid to gardaí.
Munster GAA paid the sum to the gardai for the match which drew a crowd of just over 27,000 to TUS Gaelic Grounds.
Limerick won that game and of course continued their journey to the third of four straight All-Ireland titles - a haul they hope to take to five-in-a-row.
For the 2022 final, in which Limerick triumphed over Kilkenny, there was a big screen erected at TUS Gaelic Grounds.
The event was presented by Limerick GAA in partnership with Limerick City and County Council, with the local authority paying €8,830 to the gardai to police it.
In total, across 18 months, gardai were paid almost €87,000 to police events across Limerick.
They are likely to have received more than this sum, with the information provided only covering the 10 most expensive events.
The organisation which paid the gardaí the most to cover events was Munster Rugby, with €28,922 for eight Thomond Park games.
