‘A special lady’: The late Sr Claire Morrissey
THE PHRASE “a life well lived” could have been written for Sr Claire Morrissey who passed away at the wonderful age of 100.
Sr Claire was born in Thomondgate on June 18, 1923.
Sr Colette Hourigan, of Sexton Street, said the Presentation Sisters, Limerick and Our Lady Queen of Peace parish have said farewell to a very special lady.
“Sr Claire was a lady of many gifts and talents - her love for music, her special singing voice, love for the Irish language, her love of and gift for art and her many personal gifts. Claire was non-judgemental, compassionate, and moved with the times.
“Sr Claire applied all these fights to her many ministries, community, family, and friends throughout her long and dedicated life as a Presentation Sister,” said Sr Colette.
Normally, obituaries are written about a person but Sr Colette has kindly shared words written by Sr Claire.
“From an early age I felt drawn to do something different with my life - I suppose drawn to religious life and to work with people in need. I decided to try Presentation and I entered there on October 3, 1941,” wrote Sr Claire.
After being professed as a Presentation Sister, she trained as a primary teacher in Dublin.
“In 1948, I began my real teaching career in Sexton Street Primary School which I loved. Then as the city was quickly expanding, I was one of the pioneer teachers at our new school, Our Lady Queen of Peace in Janesboro. My teaching life stretched from Sexton Street to Our Lady Queen of Peace back to Sexton Street and then to Holy Family School, Southill, until my school retirement in 1987,” wrote St Claire, who described her almost 40 years in the classroom as very happy and rewarding.
She then studied applied theology at Berkeley, California and spent 10 years at Ardfert Retreat Centre.
In 1998, Sr Claire returned to Presentation Convent, Roxboro Road, and continued to minister voluntarily in the parish, school and community which she loved.
