ON A trip to Limerick, Concern chief executive David Regan visited Ardscoil Mhuire in Corbally to speak with members of the school's debate club.
“Debates allow people to unravel complex global issues,” said the chief of the humanitarian organisation, while addressing the young debaters.
The school has been involved in the Concern School Debates competition since its inception almost 40 years ago.
School principal, Ms Bríd Herbert, and English teacher, Mr Patrick Huff, are both former Concern schools debaters and passionate supporters of debate culture within the school.
“Hundreds of our students have had the opportunity to build their confidence, find their voices, and expand their perspective on the world we all live in as a direct result of the debates existence,” said Mr Huff, who is also the coordinator of public speaking and debating at the school.
Mr Regan spoke to the school's fifth and sixth year students who are involved in the debate club about his trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Concern is working to aid the six million people currently displaced by fighting.
The school community presented a cheque to Mr O'Regan during his visit.
