New degree in Limerick university has students 'learning by doing'

Launch of collaboration between Amazon Web Services and the University of Limerick

NEW ‘BESPOKE’ studios are being built in the University of Limerick (UL) for students who will be studying a brand new degree to learn in.

Students who will be taking the new Immersive Software Engineering (ISE) degree will be using renovated studio spaces that will be able to accommodate 150 students at a time.

50% of students' time will be spent working within industry, with companies such as Amazon Web Services, Stripe and Analog Devices.

Country Lead of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Ireland visited students and staff in Limerick, who will be taking the new software engineering degree, and opened one of the newly renovated studios as part of his visit.

Neil Morris, Country Lead of AWS stressed the “vital importance” of industry collaborating with academia to “solve complex societal challenges” and “meet skill sets needed for the future”.

“Practical, applied learning is of vital importance in equipping today’s students for the modern workplace - that’s what really differentiates this course from the others,” Mr Morris said.

“Nothing beats solving real-life challenges and AWS is very glad to have some of these students work alongside us as part of their fieldwork.

“These students are the industry leaders of the future and I am determined to continue championing their skills and supporting them in their journey as tech innovators.”

ISE exists to disrupt traditional computer science education and is an integrated Bachelor/Masters degree programme, where students ‘learn by doing’.

ISE student Karl Gilmartin said of his experience: “My first ISE residency at AWS, and it revolved around the principle of ‘learn by doing’.

“Beyond the technical realm, my AWS residency proved to be a multifaceted learning experience, encompassing not only technical skills but also vital abilities like problem-solving, effective communication, and leadership.

“One of the most enriching aspects of my time at AWS was the unwavering support of an inclusive and encouraging team,” Karl concluded.
