FRIENDS and coworkers of a young man who passed away in Australia on September 28 have rallied around to help his family back home in Limerick.
Alan Walsh passed away suddenly from a medical episode while at work on a mining site in Perth.
The 26-year-old, originally from Rhebogue in Limerick city and known affectionately as 'Buller', had been living and working in Australia since 2020.
An online fundraiser set up by the construction community in Australia on Wednesday, October 4, raised over $80,000 AUD, or €40,000 in its first five days, far above its initial $5,000 AUD goal.
Those organising the fundraiser described Alan as “a much-loved family member, loyal friend and work mate”.
They have been in contact with Alan's family, and money raised will go towards the repatriation of Alan's remains to Limerick, according to the wishes of Alan's mother, Anne.
“Her wish is to give back to the Cladagh Association and the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund, we will split the funds raised three ways, to help cover some of the families' expenses and to the both charities,” the organisers said.
They also paid tribute to Alan, describing him as “surrounded by the best group of mates on-site and living his best life, with the world at his feet.”
“Alan was so well thought of by everyone who knew him, he just had one of those infectious, positive attitudes.”
Warm tributes were also posted online by St Patrick's GAA club and Geraldines AFC, both of which Alan had played for in his youth.
"You could not meet a nicer, more outgoing person that was so full of life. He would always have you in good form and bring a smile to all, such was his humorous nature and goodwill," the statement from St Patrick's read on Facebook.
Both clubs extended their deepest sympathies to Alan's family and friends at such a difficult time.
Hundreds of people also left heartfelt condolences on both posts and on Alan's own Facebook profile.
May he rest in peace.
