Final construction phase begins on Limerick hospital facility

PHASE two of construction on the development of 75 new beds in a purpose-built state-of-the-art building at St Camillus’ Hospital in Limerick city has begun.

Phase one commenced in March 2021, however experienced significant delays due to the pandemic.

Phase one will result in the development of 50 beds which will become available in the next couple of months with a further 25 beds to be built in phase two.

A spokesperson from HSE Mid West Community Healthcare said; “The new 75 bedded unit will provide a high-quality living environment for the residents of St Camillus’ residents, which will be in line with all regulatory requirements.”

The initial cost of the project was estimated to be around €18.96 million but the final cost will exceed this amount due to a number of factors including an increase in construction costs.

As the project progresses to phase two, a new traffic management plan is in place on the St Camillus’ campus site for the duration of the works.

Information on traffic management arrangements will be visible on site throughout the works and the HSE are urging visitors to adhere to these instructions.

Putting out a message on their Twitter page, HSE Mid West Community Healthcare said; “This development work will impact traffic flow on site and lead to re-designation of car parking spaces from Thursday August 31. Temporary signage will be erected on site, and will be updated as necessary throughout the works, in order to inform visitors of the traffic management arrangements.”

St Camillus Hospital was built in 1841 and its current function was set up in 1933 and this project will replace existing beds in the 121 bed facility.
