A PUBLIC consultation is due to take place for a new road, which will link Moyross Avenue and the Old Cratloe Road.

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) are to begin public consultation on a new infrastructural scheme in the city, ‘University Avenue’.

The new 650m long pedestrian, cycle and low speed vehicular link will open up access to educational institutions, sports facilities, businesses and social opportunities.

A spokesperson for LCCC said: “The proposal will have a campus style feel throughout.

“There will be a significant amount of soft landscaping and a number of breakout spaces / plazas in a high quality public realm. It will link directly to the Active Travel scheme planned for the Old Cratloe Road.”

A public consultation on the proposed scheme will take place in the Millennium Theatre Foyer, TUS Moylish Campus on Thursday, September 7, between 3pm and 8pm.

The new route will provide a pathway between Corpus Christi National School, Thomond Community College and the TUS Moylish Campus. It also provides access for the approximately 55 students from Caherdavin, currently attending Corpus Christi in Moyross.

Described as a “key” strategic infrastructure proposal for the northside of the city between communities in Moyross and Caherdavin, University Avenue will “act as a driver for economic development in the surrounding areas”.

The public can have their say and view plans, which also outline that the creation of University Avenue will provide residents with additional benefits and access to the following:

  • The proposed Moyross Railway Station on the Limerick to Galway rail line. It’s expected the rail journey time from Moyross to Colbert Station in Limerick City would be less than ten minutes. The future development of a new train station provides the opportunity to provide more avenue housing, businesses and services.
  • The upcoming Coonagh Knockalisheen Distributor Road, which will help connectivity of the local and regional road network in the northern part of the city
  • A proposed medical campus, residential and mixed use development at Ballygrennan, which is currently at pre-planning stage. The proposed development by Whitebox Developments, includes a UMPC medical facility, a nursing home and residential units.
  • The existing public library, shopping centre, bring centre, post office at Watch House Cross and also to a proposed new supermarket which is currently in the planning process.
  • Thomond RFC and Moyross AFC reducing the impact of match day traffic on the residents of Woodview and, the Community Centre, Creche and playground at Moyross

The scheme also outlines plans for the removal of the bottle bank on Dooneen Road and the removal of the wall to the rear of Stoney Meadows, which would be replaced.
