A NEW STATE-of-the-art special school facility will be opening on the grounds of a popular existing school in Limerick.

Twenty new classrooms have got the green light for development on the grounds of Crescent College Comprehensive SJ.

This new facility will accommodate students with autistic spectrum disorder and complex needs from Red Hill Special School.

Red Hill opened in 2008 and is operating out of sub-optimal accommodation within the Rehab Care Campus, Patrickswell.

While the Crescent College Comprehensive SJ and Red Hill School will be co-located, they will operate separately.

The relocation of Red Hill’s School will be accompanied by further development of Crescent’s facilities and infrastructure, including additional teaching rooms and sports facilities.

The Jesuit Provincial Fr Shane Daly, as trustee, announced the news.

He said: “All in education recognise the vital role special schools play, and I trust all in the Crescent school community will join with me in welcoming this important development for Limerick.

“We look forward to working with Red Hill Special School and the wider school community in the development of this plan and supporting its implementation over the next number of years.”
