Germany Red celebrate after winning the Hurling International Division 1 Plate Final at the FRS Recruitment GAA World Games 2023 I PICTURE: Sportsfile
THE PHENOMENAL achievements of the Limerick hurlers isn't just inspiring boys and girls from Abbeyfeale to Doon - they have gone global!
Two Germany Red players credited Limerick for sparking their comeback in the Hurling International Division 1 Plate Final in the FRS Recruitment GAA World Games 2023.
An interviewer asked Dan and Jakob (their version of Dan and Tom Morrissey) about overcoming a big deficit like Limerick did against Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final last Sunday.
"We were in the stadium actually. It was unreal," said the German natives, who agreed they took inspiration from the men in green.
They even surpassed Limerick as they came back to win against Federal of South East 2 after being down eight points at one stage.
The interviewer also said to them that they are two German guys, not Irish lads working in Germany, that are developing the game and have a love for it
"Germany is all about soccer and we are fed up with soccer to be honest. Hurling is something else and the culture behind it - it is a community, it is like a family. The world games really show this community," said Dan and Jakob, who are smiling and have their arms around each other, again just like the Limerick players last Sunday.
The FRS Recruitment GAA World Games is a competition that recognises the global expansion of Gaelic games.
In the last 10 years there has been an almost 100 per cent growth in the number of GAA clubs operating outside of Ireland with more than 500 now in existence.
The games took place from Monday to Thursday in Derry.
