THE MAYOR of Limerick City and County, Gerald Mitchell, held a two-hour meeting with An Taoiseach and Fine Gael Party Leader, Leo Varadkar, at Government Buildings where they discussed crucial issues affecting the people of Limerick and laid out their plans for the county.

Mayor Mitchell, who assumed office in June following a unanimous vote, highlighted some of his primary priorities for his term.

As the fifth Mitchell to be elected since his great grand uncle Thomas B Mitchell became the first chairman of Limerick County Council in 1899, he stated that the Mitchell motto down through the years has always been “public service, not self service.”

“Now as Mayor of Limerick City and County, I will be prioritising Uisce Eireann to upgrade sewerage plants in the county,” he added.

“Many are not fit for purpose and, as a result, are automatically stifling growth in our towns and villages, including Hospital, where I am from”.

He underscored the significance of Limerick's third-level institutions. and emphasised his commitment to investing in rural areas through Town and Village Schemes and Active Travel, acknowledging the progress so far while agreeing there is still much more to be done.

Taoiseach Varadkar, who attended with his senior ministers, expressed his satisfaction with their discussion.

The Taoiseach assured that he is committed to addressing the concerns raised by Mayor Mitchell, particularly the need for more funding for road maintenance, the Local Improvement Scheme, and increased support for solar panels and energy efficiency initiatives for farmers, schools, community buildings, and businesses.
