A BIG SCREEN is to be erected in Pery Square to broadcast the Limerick hurlers' bid for a fourth straight All-Ireland title.
This Tuesday morning, Limerick City and County Council confirmed plans to host a giant screen watch party for those who cannot make the showdown in Croke Park against Kilkenny this Sunday in person.
Access will be free, but to control crowds, it will be a ticket-only event, with details of how to get in to be confirmed later in the week.
In 2018 and again last year, the Tus Gaelic Grounds was the venue for a big screen.
But now it's back in the city centre, as was the case in 2006 and 2008 when thousands of Munster Rugby fans roared the province onto Heineken Cup glory.
Like last year, Kilkenny are Limerick's opposition for the final, with throw in at 3.30pm.
Pery Square will also play host to what is hoped will be a triumphant homecoming ceremony for the hurlers the following day.
Mayor Gerald Mitchell said: "I’m delighted to see this big screen event coming to Pery Square. It will create an exciting buzz and provide a shot in the arm for traders as families spend the day in the city. Let’s make this an occasion for everyone to enjoy and hopefully we’ll have a victorious four-in-a-row to celebrate when the final whistle blows. If you can’t be in Croke Park, Pery Square is the place to be!”
Pery Square will also be the location for any homecoming celebrations on Monday evening.
The Limerick hurling team's players and management are urging fans attending the big screen and potential homecoming events to show their pride in Limerick by leaving no litter behind.
Team boss John Kiely says it is a chance to show Limerick at its best.
"Lets make a statement by keeping Pery Square and the surrounding area really clean during the upcoming events in Limerick city. As a team we always support the Team Limerick Clean Up initiative every Good Friday and being respectful by keeping our streets clean is an important expression for all of us who are part of the Limerick Senior Hurling Team. So please don’t litter and let`s all make that extra statement of pride starting from now," he added.
There will also be full details on road closures and parking restrictions to follow.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dan McSweeney has welcomed the news, saying: "I do believe moving this event to the city centre will provide a boost to local businesses and will allow families enjoy our beautiful city."
