CLOSED circuit television (CCTV) cameras along a riverside path which has become a hotspot for anti-social behaviour are not live-monitored, it's emerged.

At this month's metropolitan district meeting, concerns were raised around the problems being experienced by people using a popular walkway connecting University of Limerick (UL) with the city centre.

Calls were made for plain-clothes garda officers to be deployed after councillors detailed a series of incidents which have taken place by people using the Canal Bank, with youngsters using scrambler bikes coming in for particular criticism.

Labour councillor Conor Sheehan asked which CCTV cameras were turned on in the Canal Bank area from Lelia Street to UL and Shannon Fields.

In a written response from the local authority's head of digital Alan Dooley, he was told the 20 operational cameras are not monitored minute-by-minute.

"The Canal and River Bank CCTV scheme operated by Limerick City and County Council consists of 11 poles with two cameras each giving a total of 22 cameras. At present, 20 cameras are recording back to our monitoring centre located at Moyross Community Enterprise Centre," he explained.

He confirmed: "These cameras are not live monitored, they are recording only. The one pole which is currently not connected to the scheme is expected to be online in the coming weeks."
