Limerick communities to receive €100k in heritage funding

Limerick communities to receive heritage funding

SEVEN local communities across Limerick are due to benefit from almost €100,000 of new heritage funding.

The new funding for Limerick will go towards equipping communities essential skills to protect biodiversity and making local landmarks accessible again.

Limerick's city's St John’s Cathedral is being offered the maximum €25,000 for reparation of its instrumental organ, which is of musical and historical value.

Shannon Rugby Club is to use its funding to archive the historic collection of records in their clubhouse.

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, said: “Every year, I love to see the creativity and dedication of our heritage sector through these projects from the Community Heritage Grant Scheme.

“It reminds me that despite the challenges we face, our heritage remains in safe hands”.

Other Limerick city amenities and community groups accessing the heritage funding include The Hunt Museum and Ormston House Cultural Resource Centre.

The Hunt Museum will be using over €20,000 to expand access for people with autism and visual impairment.

Ormston House, located on Patrick Street will use €13,161 on revamping the space for public use.

All works are to begin immediately and are expected to be completed within 2023.

Highlighting that the funding has tripled since 2020, Chairperson of The Heritage Council, Martina Moloney says that the quality of projects are “justification for this enhanced (financial) support”.

Nationally, there are 137 projects. Talks of developing new schemes in addition to the existing Community Heritage Grant Scheme are in motion, to “adapt to the needs of the sector as they evolve” according to Virginia Teehan, Chief Executive of The Heritage Council.
