One of the first to express their sympathies on the RIP.ie website was Mungret St Paul's GAA club.

"Ruairí, Niamh and the Walsh family and friends, Deepest Sympathies to you all. Your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís," wrote the club in tribute.

St Paul's National School in Dooradoyle, where Mr Walsh's son Ruairi is a popular teacher, extended their deepest sympathies to Ruairi, Niamh and Ruairi's family on the very sad loss of his dad.

"Thinking of you all at this very sad time. May he rest in peace," reads the message.

A minute's silence in memory of Mr Walsh took place prior to the throw-in at the Cork and Waterford match in Páirc Uí Chaoimh this Sunday afternoon.

May he rest in peace.
