COUNCIL says it hopes to have a contractor in place next month to widen one of Corbally’s most troublesome bottlenecks.

Plans are in place to build a new 600-metre foot and cycle path along Mill Road.

It will see significant improvements for pedestrians who in parts have to walk on pavements which measure just half a metre wide in places.

The changes have been made possible thanks to the council’s acquisition of a small part of land from the Limerick Diocese.

At this month’s metropolitan meeting, Labour councillor Conor Sheehan sought an update on the project.

In a written response from senior engineer Sean McGlynn, he was told it’s anticipated a contractor to carry out the job will be appointed mid-way through May.

The anticipated construction duration will be for around 18 months, he added.

Cllr Sheehan welcomed the answer, saying: “This is one of my main political priorities and I want to see it delivered as soon as possible. It’s imperative that construction starts on this soon as it will take time to complete."

“It will involve installation of a proper footpath to allow people safely to walk and cycle to school and work. The present arrangement down there is very dangerous – you cannot get a wheelchair or a buggy down there,” he said.
