Tributes paid to 'gentleman' Jim as popular Limerick businessman passes away

The late James 'Jim' Griffin

DRIVING inspiration through Limerick and further afield is what James ‘Jim’ Griffin did throughout his career. His passing on Thursday, April 13, has left a huge void in his local community.

Tributes have been paid to the bus driver and business owner whose name is synonymous with Griffin Coaches based in Ardpatrick, Kilmallock which he founded with his son Kevin.

The 89-year-old has been fondly remembered as a “gentleman” and “lover of all sport”.

Cherished memories and colourful stories have been recalled by many in south Limerick and beyond who James often drove to school, to matches and on tours around the country.

“Sincere condolences to all the family. Jimmy was our school bus driver in secondary school. He was a lovely man. May his gentle soul rest in peace," one person posted online following news of his death.

“So sorry to hear this. Condolences to the family. I have very fond memories of Jim from dad working with you all. May he rest in peace,” posted another.

Griffin Coaches was founded by Jim and his son Kevin in 1995, and it is a “very family-orientated business, which Jim loved” - so much so, that two of Jim’s grandchildren Derek and Sarah are now also involved in the bus driving business.

“James and his son Kevin were both Bus Éireann drivers in the beginning - they then started off with mini buses and the business grew from strength to strength.

“He was a Cork man, born in Ballyhea, but when Griffin's Coaches expanded to driving the Limerick teams, he was incredibly proud,” said a member of the family.

“Jim was very GAA-orientated and when the company started driving Limerick teams, he became an honorary Limerick man!” they added.

Jim will be reposing at McCarthy's Funeral Home, Kilfinane on April 15 from 6pm - 8pm, while requiem Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Ardpatrick will take place on April 16 at midday.
