THE BUDDING journalists of University of Limerick (UL) hosted their official launch of their student newspaper Limerick Voice on campus in Glucksman Library on Wednesday.

The Limerick Voice print edition is distributed around the county with this week’s Limerick Leader. The award winning student newspaper is a free accompaniment to the Limerick Leader annually.

The 16th edition of the Limerick Voice is a project run by UL’s journalism and communications department, and tasks final year students and Masters students to create, design and publish a newspaper of their own with relevant and local content.

The publication is also a representation of their hard work and dedication throughout the year, as they are challenged to work as a fully functioning news team and post on multimedia platforms throughout the year too.

UL Lecturer and Course Director for the BA in Journalism and Communication, Kathryn Hayes; who oversees the multimedia project each year; said the experience of working on Limerick Voice provides real-life experience for journalism students.

“Limerick Voice has developed into an award-winning, multimedia news project, which has become an integral part of journalism education in UL.

“It provides a wonderful portfolio building opportunity for our students as they prepare to enter the highly competitive world of work.

“We are very proud of this year’s newspaper edition, and the sterling work that has been produced across all of the Limerick Voice multimedia platforms since the beginning of the academic year.”

Thirty students published over 200 stories in total, across all Limerick Voice multimedia platforms. 400 minutes of podcasts and radio news bulletins were broadcast and at peak times, student reporters were producing 15 stories per week.
