GARDAI have launched an investigation following the theft of a licenced firearm from a house in County Limerick.

The house in Ballingarry was targeted in recent days and one line of enquiry is that the intruders were aware that the weapon was in the property.

"In this case a firearm was stolen, nothing else was disturbed or taken from the house. This is very serious as the gun could be used in criminal activity," said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.

"I want to remind all firearms holders that if you are licenced to own one firearm, you must use a trigger lock, disassemble the firearm and securely store the parts separately," she added.

Those who are licenced to hold three or more firearms are further reminded that they must store them in a locked gun safe that is bolted to a solid wall.

Anyone with information about the incident in Ballingarry is asked to contact gardai in Newcastle West or any garda station.
