LIMERICK'S St Patrick’s Day Parade and the International Band Championship parade will once again march down Henry Street this year.
The decision not to return to the traditional O'Connell Street route was confirmed following consultation between city centre stakeholders, elected officials and Limerick City and County Council.
The assembly point is Sarsfield Barracks and the starting point is at O’Connell Avenue, Roden Street junction.
The parade will head down O’Connell Avenue, The Crescent, O’Connell Street and then turn left onto Glentworth Street, turn right onto Henry Street, continuing down Henry Street, onwards to Liddy Street and Arthur’s Quay Park.
The parade then turns left onto Patrick Street before it ends at Rutland Street by Mathew Bridge.
On Sunday March 19, the 51st Limerick International Band Championship takes place, assembling at Pery Square.
It will start at O’Connell Avenue, Hartstonge Street junction and then the parade route heads down The Crescent, O’Connell Street, turning left onto Glentworth Street and right onto Henry Street, continuing down Henry Street, onwards to Liddy Street and finishing at Arthur’s Quay Park.
A jamboree will be held at Arthur’s Quay Park with the bands performing and the winners of the competition announced.
A special autism friendly area will be located along the route at the Crescent, for both parades and will include a sensory room, covered marquee and seating area. Access to this area will be limited with special wristbands being provided by ASD Ireland.
Eileen Coleman, SEO Tourism, Arts, Festivals and Events said: “Here in Tourism, Festivals and Events we are looking forward to St. Patrick’s weekend, when we gather together to celebrate all things Irish. Limerick City will be humming with activity and there is plenty to look forward to including the centre-piece St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Friday March 17 a popular day out for families in Limerick".
“There will be family fun activities in the city throughout the weekend and on Sunday, the uniquely Limerick event, the International Band Parade will take place. The city will be open for business and we encourage everyone to come out on that weekend to celebrate and enjoy the best of Limerick," she added.
