Community spirit ensures scouts return for Limerick children

Part of the roof was damaged after a water pipe burst

LOCALS in a city community have been praised for their generosity after they rallied together to help restore the local scouts den which was damaged when part of the roof collapsed over Christmas, writes Faye Dorgan.

More than €1,100 has been raised through a online campaign to help pay for the repair works at the St Mary's 2nd-6th scouts den at Athlunkard Street.

After the roof caved in, due to a burst pipe in the freezing weather, parents set up the GoFundMe page.

Barry McInerney, of St Mary’s Scouts has thanked everyone for their support: “We turned off the water and salvaged as much as we could - we didn't expect to see what we saw. Because it was Christmas, we were reluctant to put the story out to the community at the time,” said Mr McInerney.

“Over the holidays, a lot of us gathered and did what we could to fix the problem - parents who are trading plumbers etc gave us a hand. It has now been repaired and is being plastered soon, as we look forward to the scouts and cubs returning.”
