Renowned legal mind from Limerick to be laid to rest

Mr Justice John Murray died last week, aged 79

THE funeral will take place this Monday of the “extraordinary” former Chief Justice, John L Murray, who died last week at the age of 79.

Born in Limerick in 1943, Mr Murray was first educated at Crescent College in the city before later becoming a barrister, dealing with commercial, civil and constitutional law.

In a statement, Minister for Justice, Simon Harris described Judge Murray as a “distinguished jurist”, having served twice as Attorney General, and for a remarkable 24 years as a judge.

During his career, the Limerick man served as a judge of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, as a judge of the Supreme Court and as Chief Justice of Ireland from 2004 to 2011.

Many heartfelt tributes have been paid by many of Mr Murray’s respected colleagues and friends since his death last Wednesday.

Barrister Brian McInerney SC offered his condolences to Judge Murray’s family and his friends.

Having achieved the highest judicial office in the country, Mr McInerney described him as “the colossus - having achieved that office based on merit and ability, executing the office with efficiency, balance and courtesy at all times.”

President of UL, Prof Kerstin Mey paid tribute to the former Chancellor of University of Limerick: “When John took on the role of Chancellor he said that ‘learning and education concern the soul of a nation’ and he was deeply committed to that vision and the provision of education. He will be sadly missed by his many colleagues and friends at University of Limerick.”

Tributes have been paid at courts across Limerick and speaking prior to the commencement of Newcastle West Court on Thursday last, Judge Carol Anne Coolican noted "with regret" the passing of former Chief Justice and Attorney General John Murray saying he was an "interesting" man.

"He not only served as chief justice but also as a judge of the European Court of Justice. He was attorney general not once but twice. Minister for Justice Simon Harris said he was 'a most distinguished jurist' and he definitely was," said Judge Coolican.

John Murray's funeral Mass will take place at 11.30am this Monday in The Holy Rosary Church, Greystones, County Wicklow with burial afterwards in Priestnewtown Cemetery, Kilquade.

Mr Justice Murray is survived by his wife Gabrielle; children Catriona and Brian and his grandchildren Samuel, Anna, Sarah, Kate, Chloe, Conor and Matthew.

May he rest in peace.
