THE HEALTH Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) is seeking views from stakeholders and members of the public in Limerick as part of its independent statutory review of urgent and emergency care services in the Mid-West.

Confirming details of the survey, it says the results will help inform the delivery of safe quality urgent and emergency care in the Mid-West.

Earlier this year, the outgoing Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, requested that HIQA conduct a review of urgent and emergency care in the region amid concerns over the levels of consistent overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick.

The primary objective of the review is to ensure safe and quality acute care across the region, which has a population of more than 400,000 people.

"As part of this review, HIQA was requested to consider the case for a second emergency department within the region in the context of the population changes in recent years and ongoing pressures at the emergency department at University Hospital Limerick," stated a spokesperson for HIQA.

To inform the review, HIQA is now seeking the views of patients, family members, members of the public, healthcare professionals, representative groups and interested parties in the mid-west region.
