CONCERNS have been raised over anti-social behaviour as a number of individuals have been spotted entering Limerick estates late at night wearing balaclavas.

In a video seen by the Leader, a group of individuals have been spotted leaving a vehicle in Manor Brook estate in Adare last week. All four individuals are wearing masks.

According to local Fine Gael councillor for Adare/Rathkeale, Adam Teskey, this news is worrying.

“We have an ongoing situation in regards to anti-social behaviour, now in its extreme form where we have people wearing masks at night arriving into housing estates, possibly checking to see where is the best target in terms of trying to achieve breaking into people’s homes,” Cllr Teskey said.

Cllr Teskey is also the current chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee (JPC), which aims to develop greater consultation, cooperation and synergy on policing and crime issues between An Garda Síochána (AGS), the local authority and elected local representatives.

“This is a very worrying concern locally, particularly in Adare where we have recently lost a member of AGS due to retirement and other guards due to other reasons such as promotion.

“These have yet to be replaced,” Cllr Teskey said.

“Their loss is now inevitably being witnessed and seen firsthand and these thieves are seen to be opportunistic in terms of knowing that the resources are not available on the ground to tackle this in a proactive manner and fashion,” Cllr Teskey continued..

The Fine Gael councillor is calling for more resources to be provided to Adare and the local area, whether these resources come from the garda college or the passing out of new garda recruits.

“Limerick county as a whole, I feel, is completely under-resourced and the credibility of AGS both locally and nationally is at a pivotal stage in terms of enforcing law and order and protecting the citizens that have to be protected,” Cllr Teskey added.
