The late Cormac Liddy
THERE has been widespread sadness following news of the passing of former long-serving Limerick Leader journalist Cormac Liddy on Tuesday.
The late Cormac Liddy enjoyed a distinguished career in journalism, dating back more than 50 years.
He was a staff member with the Limerick Leader for 41 years and sports editor with the title for 21 years.
The Limerick man also reported on all sports on a freelance basis for national newspaper titles as well as RTE.
The late Cormac Liddy was also a Peace Commissioner and was a former member of the Irish Film Censorship Appeals Board.
Paying tribute, former Limerick Leader editor Eugene Phelan said it was 'an honour to call the late Cormac Liddy a friend'.
Eugene Phelan said: "When I joined the Limerick Leader in 1975 Cormac was the heart beat of the paper, he was covering news and sport with great gusto, not just for the Leader but also for all the national papers and RTE.
"He loved hurling and was great pals with the great Limerick All-Ireland winning team of 1973, Eamonn Grimes, Eamonn Cregan and Pat Hartigan were great buddies. Everyone in the greyhound world knew Cormac as did those in politics as his dad Rory was Fianna Fail Mayor of Limerick.
"He was great friends with former Education Minister, the late Donogh O'Malley, and if half the stories about the fun they got up to are true there's a book in them for sure.
"Cormac broke many exclusive stories and was first to find out about the kidnapping of Tiede Heremma in 1978 and of course his article when meeting Pope John Paul II when he visited Limerick in 1979 was a masterpiece in how to write a thousand words after a brief hand shake.
"He loved tennis and was an accomplished player. Cormac also reported on the Wimbledon Championships as a journalist.
"There was definitely only one Cormac Liddy and I am sure the stories told this week about him will bring a smile to everyone. It was an honour to call him a friend."
Sincere sympathy to the Liddy family at this sad time.
Funeral arrangements later.
