Limerick City bridge nine year gap to win Mackey Cup

Limerick City bridge nine year gap to win Mackey Cup

The victorious Limerick City team that won the Mackey Cup

LIMERICK City primary schools are the Mackey Cup champions for the first time since 2014 following a 0-8 to 1-3 victory over West Limerick last Tuesday at Mick Neville Park.

The city side held a five-point half time advantage and withstood a comeback from their west opponents to hold on for a tight win.

A strong breeze blew straight down the pitch and it had a huge effect on the pattern of play. Limerick City enjoyed that advantage and made good use of it, holding the West scoreless while racking up five unanswered points.

John Sheehan was unerring from long range frees while Donnacha Ó hArgáin and Even Carroll scored neat points to give them a 0-5 to 0-0 half time lead.

Darragh O’Connor opened the West Limerick account on the restart and captain Ruán Kelliher added a second point following a strong run. Brendan Meehan then got through the City rearguard for a goal to tie the game.

Limerick City were on the rack but they responded with a point to edge in front. Eoghan Kiely then levelled for the West and the game hung in the balance.

A free put City one point to the good and they then struck again through Seán Donnelly to seal a two-point win and earn the title for the first time in nine years.
