Former US President Donald Trump to touch down in Shannon for Doonbeg trip

FORMER US president Donald Trump could do worse than talking to Clare manager Brian Lohan about how to beat the reigning champions during his two day visit this week.
Mr Trump, who is running for the White House again in 2024, aims to retake the presidency from Joe Biden. His private jet is due to touch down in Shannon Airport this Wednesday following his stay in Scotland.
Mr Trump will stay at his luxury Doonbeg hotel and golf resort and is expected to play his renowned links course.
When the tycoon visited Ireland in May 2014, he landed at Shannon Airport to a red carpet reception with musicians and singers. Former Fine Gael leader, minister for finance and long-serving Limerick TD Michael Noonan led the welcome. It is not known if those scenes will be replicated this week but sources imply it will be a low key event.
Security will be tight for the former US president. A garda spokesperson told the Limerick Leader “An Garda Síochána does not comment on any matters of national or international security”. However, it is understood that US secret service representatives have been in contact with local gardai regarding the private visit.
Prior to the trip abroad, Mr Trump said on Truth Social - the social media platform he owns - he will be leaving for Scotland and Ireland soon “in order to see and inspect my great properties there”.
“The golf courses and hotels are among the greatest in the world - Turnberry and Aberdeen, in Scotland, and Doonbeg, in Ireland. Will be meeting with many wonderful friends. Very exciting despite the fact that it is 'make America great again' that is on my mind, in fact, America will be greater than ever before.”
