Limerick IFA chair raises derogation concern with minister at packed meeting

LIMERICK IFA chair Louise Crowley addressed Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon at a national meeting held by the IFA on the retention of the nitrates derogation.

Ms Crowley was one of around 1,000 farmers to pack into Corrin Mart in Fermoy last week.

“Minister, as a derogation farmer myself and one of the many young farmers that are here tonight I am deeply concerned about this potential loss for far too long.

"A loss or any  further reduction will not only endanger my own livelihood but also threaten the viability of our entire farm and the many family farms, just like us across the country and my own county Limerick,” said Ms Crowley.

She said the uncertainty they are facing is a big huge factor in why young farmers are not entering farming and current farmers are facing succession issues. 

“How do you plan to fulfill your promise to us of a workable derogation to ensure both the future of existing and future farmers, and family farms, relying on the derogation can stay productive, viable and part of Irish agriculture. 

“What reassurance can you give us to the young farmers who have and are ready to step up but see no clear future in their sectors under this current uncertainty. 

“The time for fulfilling your promise to us is now. We need answers and certainty and not after it’s too late and our farms are gone and finished,” said Ms Crowley to loud applause.
